About
Me
I
was born in Taiwan in 1978 and I have lived in America
for most of my adult life. Since I was young I have had
a love for color and form. With the support of my parents
I came to Califonia in 1996 to pursue my education in
art. While a student at San Francisco State University
I began to focus on ceramic sculpture. After I graduating
in 2003 I went back to Taiwan for a year to reconnect
with my family and culture. I moved back to the Bay Area
where I can live with a wider range of artists. I currently
teach ceramics in several places as well as maintain a
studio practice in Oakland, CA.
Artist Statement
*Pottery*
I want to expresses my love of animals through my work. My goal is to provide fun and interesting functional objects for people to enjoy in their homes. Hand drawn images of animals contrasted with patterns of color or texture covers the surface of my pottery. I write phrases in Chinese characters that explain what I think the animals are experiencing, often in a humorous way. Since Chinese is my native language, I can express myself without challenge. I also like the fact that the people who use my pots most likely do not read Chinese, therefore they are able to come up with their own captions. I choose to make functional pottery because it allows people to enrich their lives by using everyday objects that contain humor, interesting compositions and subtle designs.
*Sculpture*
My
artwork is about human relations and the differences and
similarities between individuals . I am interested in
capturing universal human emotions shared by people of
vastly different personalities and backgrounds. The human
head is the home of our thoughts and senses. I create
ceramic heads in relation to one another and other objects
to convey my ideas about how we see, feel and think about
other people. Often these heads are simple in construction
and surface because the focus should be on the relationship
between the elements of the sculptures not on the ceramic
work itself.
